Message:  Mother Earth News had a great article (a long time ago) about using film cannisters for 1) survival kit - the "string" saw, matches dipped in wax to be waterproof, tiny compass, etc.
2) first aid kit - bandaids, tiny tube of antibacterial, can't remember the rest. 3) sewing kit - needle, thread, thimble, single edge razor blade

I have also found them wonderful for storing seed, dry thoroughly first. A regular address label fits around nicely and you can computer print them to show name, growing conditions (sun/shade) and height/color.
