Subject:  Re: Did you do Group Scuba last year?
Message:  Our church did SCUBA last year and it was the greatest VBS ever!

We created our own crafts with what was available on hand. We did not give out the squirt toys, too expensive, but no one missed it. Try Oriental Trading Company for cheap bulk items. We used lots of crate paper as undersea kelp, and "waves" of water. Hung balloons upside down for water bubbles. Cut lots of creatures from foam board and found stuffed animals (Nemo for example, borrowed of course). We concentrated on the singing area and entrance area with decorations.

My group of kids (the age differences are a real hit) traveled from place to place in interesting ways, such as, squeezing into a large inner tube, wearing googles, masks, and/or flippers (each child brought their own that day),holding a noodle or other floating device, wearing life jackets, etc. They seemed to get a kick out of it and by the end of the week other groups were copying us.

The food was sometimes awful to the adults, but the children loved it. Get all that stuff donated by parents.

The highlight was the Jonah/whale day. Worth every effort. Someone donated a large black plastic, try somneone in construction.

My favorite thing of SCUBA was the reality for the younger children; one day, the leader of the story told everyone to pretend to dive into the water and swim into the room. One of the boys in my group started crying because he didn't know how to swim. :) The older children didn't seem to get bored with the activities and the older children really loved to help the younger children in their groups. SCUBA has such a great way to hide God's word and teachings in the children's hearts that will be remembered for a long time.

Go for it, find some imaginative people and start planning now!
