Subject:  Re: Family Literacy Bags!
Message:  I've been using and making my own literacy bags for about 5 years. Once the parents get to know what you are doing, you might have a few of them offer to make the bags for you. How to get started?   Pick a book you are sure the children will enjoy. Find some type of bag. it can be most anything. Of course if you decorate it, the kids will enjoy it all the more, but even a simple red backpack makes a great Clifford bag. Think of an activity for the children to do at home related to the book. This could be as simple as drawing a picture of what they think might happen next in the story. Occasionally, I put in two books and have the children draw about the one they liked best. We almost alwyas include a journal. Parent write in the journal. They write about the experince. If you include a small stuffed animal, the adult can write about what the child and the animal did together. For example if you have a good book about a dog, a stuffed dog that they need to take care of, some crayons and paper, a small notebook and a bag, you've got everything you need. Of courser a note to mom or dad about the bag is a good idea. Br sure to look in the bag when it is returned and read the jopurnal entry or show the picture to the class.   You could do a rhyming bag and have the children make a Humpty Dumpty picture. Once you get started you will have plenty of bags. We have a transportation bag, a button bag, a music bag, a mystery bag, a Meet My Class bag, a science bag, a farm bag, a dino bag and many. many more. Literacy bags are the best thing I have ever done to encourage reading at home!
