A couple ideas are:
1) flip them upside down, paint them green and attach craft foam or construction paper arms, legs, tail and head for a turtle. Similar to http://familycrafts.about.com/library/graphics/kristenpca.gif
2) Make mini plant pots for the kids (they can paint them/decorate them as they wish). Plant apple seeds, orange seeds, etc from fruits they eat. It's a good nutrition project.
3) Flip them upside down, paint them various colors, poke holes and thread them onto a straw. Put eyes, nose, mouth on to make a caterpillar or snake.
4) shorter ones can be painted as a ladybug
5) shorter ones (applesauce) can be made as graduation caps for teddy bears, etc. Use http://www.makingfriends.com/d_gradcap.htm but substitute a applesauce container for the bowl and make the top a bit smaller.
6) spider: turn upside down, paint black, add eyes and pipecleaner legs
7) totem pole: glue 2 together opening to opening, make 2 or 3 of these. Paint/decorate as totem pole. Add scrap paper, feathers, beads etc. Stack one on top of the other
8) People: make similar to the totem pole. Use 2 pudding cups glued opening to opening as the body and 2 applesauce cups glued opening to opening as the head. Add yarn hair, wiggly eyes, cardboard or craft foam arms and feet. You can make basic people or a clown, policeman, fireman, etc.
