I don't control the advertising on the site 100%. I'm currently working with the ad managers I'm using to reduce the pop ups. Other than that, there's not much I can do about changes in the market. I'm a very small site in the big scheme of things (too big to be able to afford to be ad-free and too small to be able to control things).
At one point I tried the "membership" idea (viewers paying for a members only area of the site), but I was unable to raise enough funds to pay for bandwidth charges and the like with that method.
