Hi, If you set the kids in front of a car mat, with a bunch of matchbox cars, they may spend the whole party there!
I'm not sure if you've seen those car rugs in the toy store... but if you don't have one, you can make your own.
Just take 4 or so pieces of posterboard and tape them together (you can make it larger or smaller depending on how many kids are attending). If it's a large party you may prefer to make two smaller boards instead of one huge board.
Draw on roads and paint dark grey or black (or use black sports or electrical tape). Add yellow lines.
Make trees and bushes using cotton balls died green (just put cotton balls in a zip loc bag, add a tsp or so of rubbing alcohol + a few drops of green food color. Smush around (yes, smush is a technical crafting term *grin*)... set on a piece of tinfoil to dry.
Paint in some green grass.
You can purchase road signs in bags at the toy store (quite inexpensive) or make your own using toothpics (or small craft sticks) and cardboard.
