We don't have too many musical crafts on the site so far. What we do have is at

I think a rain stick would be fun -- though not "musical" it's still based on sound. It has South American roots which makes it kind of cool. It's also complicated enough that 10 year olds should enjoy it. They can "get creative" when painting or decorating the stick. We made ours according to the directions and then paper mached and painted the outside. We usually paper mache before painting just to make the projects last a bit longer than plain cardboard tube ones would http://homearts.com/depts/family/88rain11.htm
