While I was roaming about Michaels looking for a picture of etching cream, I bumped into crayons that work on glass. I've never used them myself, but I thought they might fit the bill for your plates idea.
I would suggest you go to Michaels on-line and peek at them ... you can email them using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of their website. Give them some info about what you're trying to do and ask if the crayons will work!
(No, I'm not affiliated with Michaels *giggle*... I just find it handy to be able to read about products and look at photos before venturing out to the craft store to buy things. I've never purchased on-line from them -- I'm in Canada and I find it terribly expensive/difficult to order things from US based companies. I don't have any idea how well their on-line system works.)
