Hi
I'm a newbee to here from the UK. Excellent site, with so many ideas to keep my 3yr old occupied.
I found this site by searching for a bread recipe - having found your banana bread (one of my favourites) can you tell me what "shortening" is? I would like to give it a try

Hi!
That's great! Welcome to the discussion group and the site!
Shortening, well its sort of a cross between butter and oil. We get them in bricks here and I use it primarily for making pie crusts. It is also called lard.
Here is something I found on a website to help explain better:
The word "shortening" always confuses me. Is it "butter," "margarine," "lard" or something like "Crisco"? All of the above — technically. Shortening, in its most generic meaning, is any fat or oil that is used to make a short crust or dough (one that has a high ratio of fat to flour, and turns out tender, crumbly, and rich).
In general usage, when you see the word shortening as an ingredient in a recipe in this country, the author is referring to solid vegetable shortening, of which Crisco is the best-known brand.
I hope that helps!

Hello
My name is Lurene. South Africa.
I stumbled onto your sight purely by mistake and loving it.
I read about alice band crowns which is a very easy and brilliant idea which my daughter is definately having to do on her 7th mermaid birthday next year. One of the moms replied and said her daughter fell wearing a alice band and there was tiny holes left in her childs head. OUCH!
I do not want to put a damper on your chit chat but when my husband was younger his sister wore of course these crowns (20 something years back). We all did.
All the kids were sitting in the back of a van riding on the farm roads and went over a bump in the road (they were not speeding. Two kids fell out. The boy was fine but his sister had to be raced off to hospital. This had left her with brain damage and died through this thanks to the alice band with teeth. She was on 8 yrs old. The doctor said that he had many cases of this.
Please mums I urge you to rather have your children wear alice band that are padded and have no teeth. I know that they grip better. But it was the grip that led to Heike's death.....
Thank you.

Hi Leanne and all,
Like many others wrote -I have visited this site for years but I don't ever remember seeing the lessonplan page. However I did a search for water cycle and to my great amazement up popped an old friend. Your water cycle walk is definitely going into my plan book for after vacation. It's very cool- now why didn't I think of that.
Thanks

I love your site. It is wonderful. I am a teacher here in Venezuela. Will you post any discussions in Spanish?
