Hi Everyone and Creative Idea People! We are doing a unit on the 5 senses in my daycare program. Do you have any ideas. I have ideas for sound (making rain sticks, and instruments) guessing game of various sounds, touch (many various objects for them to touch in a box and have them guess it), smell (various foods - lemon, coffee, banana peel, etc.)we already did the taste (by the way they loved it and were very interested in tasting everything) see (oh gee, I guess anything and everyting!) Do any of you have any more ideas that I can incorporate. We are also going to make booklets on the various units. The kids are 3 and 4 years old by the way. Thanks for your input!

Hi Debbie!
How about letting the children run their hands thru rice, sand, baby powder(I think flour would stick to their hands and be extra messy), cotton balls, cooked speghetti. Stuff like that. Hope I could help.

What about a re-enactment of Little Red Riding Hood? Teach the the following "actions" to the story as you read it aloud.

When Little Red Riding Hood walks in the forest, the kids pat their hands on their legs. At the end when the wolf is chasing her, they pat their legs faster. Explain to the kids this is what is called a "sound" effect.

When the wolf spots Little Red Riding Hood in the forest, have kids look through fake binoculars - their hands. This is to emphasize the "sight" part of it.

When the Big Bad Wolf approaches her, have the kids sniff really loud, to indicate the wolf smells goodies in the basket, to emphasize the "smell" part. Also, have the kids lick their lips, when the wolf looks at the basket, to emphasize "taste".

Then, after the wolf hides in granny's bed and Little Red Riding Hood comes to see him, and asks the questions about the big eyes, and big nose, and big ears, and big teeth, have each of the kids touch these parts of their faces to emphasize "touch".

That's all I can think of for now. Good Luck.

Oh, I also forgot to mention that there are different "5 Senses" songs out there. Here are a few you might like:

The 5 Senses Song ("Old MacDonald" Tune)
5 Senses ("Where is Thumbkin" Tune)
Five Senses by Ron Brown
Sing a Song of Senses ("Farmer in the Dell" Tune) and other 5 Senses Poems

Good Luck!

Oh, and...

what about a Five Senses Show and Tell Day. Have a day where each child is encouraged to bring something that incorporates just one of the five senses. The kids would have fun coming up with this "homework" assignment.
