Thanks to my Grandma Wiebe and my mom Alice for sharing this with me!

Grandma's Doughnuts
Ingredients:
Doughnut ingredients:
 • 1 cup scalded milk (heated in the
   microwave till boiling)
 • 2/3 cups butter (used margarine)
 • 1 cup white sugar
 • 2 tsp. salt
 • Mix and cool to lukewarm. Then add:
 • 1 cup lukewarm water with
 • 2 rounded tbsp. yeast dissolved in it
(let sit in the water for about 10
   min.)
 • 4 eggs
 • Approximately 6 cups flour or enough to
   make a soft dough.
Doughnut Glaze:
 • Boil together: (for at least 5
 • minutes)
 • 1/2 cup butter (not margarine)
 • 1 cup white sugar
 • 1/2 cup milk
 • Then add: (just turned the heat way down before adding):
 • 1 cup icing sugar (stirred in with wire wisk so it wouldn't get lumpy)
 • 1/4 tsp. salt
 • 1/2-1 tsp. vanilla
 •
Directions:
Doughnut directions:
 1.  Let rise in a warm place covered with a tea towel for about 1-2 hours.
 2.  Then punch the dough down and roll out on a well floured surface to about 2 cm thick. I got just over 2
     dozen doughnuts.
 3.  Shape with a doughnut cutter and place the shaped dough flat on cookie sheets (I also used parchment
paper so they wouldn't stick). Cover with a tea towel and let them rise in a warm place for about 2
     hours.
 4.  I use a dutch oven and filled it 3/4 full of oil and heat to 375 degrees.
 5.  Only put about 4 doughnuts in the first batch as they get brown really fast!
 6.  Flip with a fork to brown on both sides and remove onto paper towel.
Glaze directions:
 7.  Take off heat and immediately dip one side of each doughnut.
 8.  The icing should stick and not be too runny.
 9.  The key to make this glaze work is to use butter instead of margarine and to boil at least 5 minutes!
