Illuminating Camp Craft: Tin Can Lanterns for Kids
Hey there, crafty campers! Ready to add a touch of magic to your camp nights? Our Tin Can Lanterns are an enchanting way to illuminate the darkness and bring an atmosphere of cozy warmth. This fun and engaging project will not only add a sparkle to your camp setup but also kindle creativity in your young ones. Plus, it's a fantastic way to recycle used tin cans. Let's light up the night together!
Materials:
- Clean tin cans (any size will work)
- A hammer
- A nail
- Tea light candles (I prefer outdoor, battery operated ones)
- Optional: spray paint (black or any colour of your choice)
Instructions:
- Start by ensuring your tin cans are clean and completely dry. Remove any labels or sticky residues.
- Fill each can with water and put them in the freezer until the water is completely frozen. This makes the cans sturdier, helping you create cleaner holes when you poke them with nails.
- Once the water is completely frozen, it's time to let your creativity shine! Using a hammer and nail, poke holes in the tin cans. You can make any pattern or image you fancy – stars, moons, hearts, the sky's the limit! Keep the design simple if this is your first time making a tin can lantern.
- After making your design, let the ice melt and dry the can thoroughly.
- Optional: Add a touch of colour! Spray paint your tin cans now. Black paint can enhance the glow from the candles, but feel free to choose any colour you like. Remember to let the paint dry completely before the next step.
You can also paint just parts of the can to further add to the design!
- Finally, place a tea light candle inside each can.
- As night falls, light your candles and watch as your camp transforms into a magical, twinkling wonderland.
Safety is key, so always remember to never leave lit lanterns unattended and an adult should always be present when kids are working on this project.
Happy crafting, and enjoy your beautiful, starry camp nights!
