National Build a Scarecrow Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in July each year. Technically, it is an unofficialy holiday in the United States, but that doesn't mean it isn't a fun time to celebrate and build a scarecrow!
Scarecrows are human-like figures typically made of straw, sticks, and old clothing that have been used for centuries to ward of birds from farms. When farmers plant their seeds, they have to be careful to protect the farm from birds so that the seeds are able to grow rather than being eaten up by animals. Birds and other animals have been taught over time to be afraid of humans, which is why people started creating scarecrows to try and immitate a human standing in the field. Unfortunately, they don't always work because they don't move or make loud noises, which would be much scarier to the wildlife. Nowadays, farmers may use more modern tools like noise machines or reflective objects to scare off birds. Although that doesn't mean that building a scarecrow isn't tons of fun! Plus a lot of people use scarecrows as decorative pieces during autumn!
