National Aviation Day Crafts and Activities for Kids
In the United States, National Aviation Day is celebrated on August 19th each year. The holiday was established in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. August 19th is the birthday of Orville Wright who, together with his brother Wilbur, built the world’s first successful airplane with aircraft controls that enabled them to steer the plane.
Orville Wright made the first flight in their airplane, named "The Wright Flyer", on December 17, 1903 -- it lasted 12 seconds and flew 120 feet. They were not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft but they are the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed wing flight possible.
Activities during National Aviation Day include celebrating the efforts of the Wright brothers, Amelia Earhart and other aviation pioneers.
