In 1904 Robert Pim Butchart began a limestone quarry and cement plant on Vancouver Island. When the quarry was exhausted his wife Jennie decided to turn it into something pretty. She covered the floor of the quarry with topsoil and, eventually, it became the Sunken Garden.
