Japan Childrens' Day - May 5th
Children's Day (Tengo no Sekku) is a Japanese National holiday celebrated on May 5th each year. It is at the end of one of the biggest "week's off" for the Japanese worker with many businesses closed for the 9 or 10 days leading up to Children's Day.
Children's Day is a day to celebrate the happiness of children and to show gratitude to mothers.
Originally, Tengo no Sekku was celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th moon of the Lunar calendar. Once Japan adopted the 12 month "Gregorian" calendar, they decided to celebrate on May 5th.
Koinobori are carp-looking wind socks that Japanese people hang up to decorate during this holiday time.
