Poland, a country in Eastern Europe, is known for beautiful cities and a diverse physical geography. It is an important country for children to study for these reasons.

As the name suggests, the official language of Poland is Polish. Together with other Lekhitic languages, as well as languages like Czech, Slovak, and Upper and Lower Sorbian, Polish belongs to the West Slavic branch of Slavic languages.

Poland is a country found in the Northern Hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere of the globe. As of 2021, Poland is divided into 16 political divisions (called provinces in English or voivodeships in Polish): wielkopolskie (Greater Poland), kujawsko-pomorskie (Kuyavia-Pomerania), małopolskie (Lesser Poland), łódzkie (Łódź), dolnośląskie (Lower Silesia), lubelskie (Lublin), mazowieckie (Masovia), opolskie (Opole), podlaskie (Podlaskie), pomorskie (Pomerania), śląskie (Silesia), podkarpackie (Subcarpathia), świętokrzyskie (Holy Cross Province), warmińsko-mazurskie (Warmia-Masuria), and zachodniopomorskie (West Pomerania).

Poland borders Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, and Russia (the Kaliningrad exclave). Its northern border (440 km long) runs along the Baltic Sea coast.

  • The name “Poland” originates from the name of the peoples “Polanie,” which means “people living in open fields.”

Poland's National Flower

The corn flower or corn poppy is Poland's national flower.  The corn poppy is the same flower as we here in Canada have as a Remembrance Day symbol.
