Husky Paper Model

This Siberian husky dog is a cut and paste paper craft that is fun for young children to make and proudly display.  An older child or adult may have to assist younger children in folding and gluing the husky to make him stand up.

Materials:

• something to color with if using the B&W version,
• scissors,
• glue,
• paper
• Optional:  cardboard or cardstock (old cereal boxes work well)

Instructions:

• Print out the template of choice - either black and white or color.
• Optional:  Glue the template onto a piece of thin cardboard (old cereal boxes) or cardstock.  This will make your husky stand up a lot longer if you plan to display it for a long time.  If you just use white paper, eventually the legs will collapse and your dog will lie down (though you could reinforce the legs with toothpicks or strips of cardboard when they give out, if you like)
• If you used the black and white version, color in the picture.  Most Siberian huskies are black and white but they also come in grey/white, cinnamon-brown/white or red/white. 
   
  Huskies have very thick warm fur; thicker than almost any other type of dog.  This fur can protect them from up to -70F (-60C) which is important in the cold arctic climates that they come from.  Make sure you color it in well, so your husky stays nice and toasty warm!
• Cut out the template pieces -- parents can help cut out some of the more difficult pieces.
• Fold the head in half and glue the two halves together so it's colored on both sides.
• Glue the ears onto the top of the head (they don't have to match up, you can leave one cocked forward while the other tilts backward).
• Cut along the dotted line on the head (this cuts about halfway through the neck, allowing the head to slide onto the body.
• Fold the body in half, cut along the dotted line near the neck.
• Slide the top dotted line cut from the head into the body cut.  Apply a bit of glue as necessary -- we added glue where the head met the body and about halfway down the chest (we likely used a little too much!).
• Glue the dog's tail and a bit of his behind together, so the tail is colored on both sides.
• Leave the legs unglued so the husky will stand up on it's own.
• Optional:  There are two rectangular tabs on the template.  If you like, you can fold them into U-shapes (fold on the dotted line) and glue between the feet to give them a bit more support.

Templates:

• Close the template window after printing to return to this screen.
• Set page margins to zero if you have trouble fitting the template on one page (FILE, PAGE SETUP or FILE, PRINTER SETUP in most browsers).
