Groundhog Paper Craft

This groundhog is a simple cut and paste paper craft that is fun for young children to make.  It makes a great project for preschool and kindergarten kids and works well for a mammals, groundhog's day or letter G theme.

You have a choice of filling out a groundhog's day prediction (shown in the photo) or a piece of blank writing paper which you can use to write your own short story, report or poem about groundhogs.

This is also a nice craft to make to add a little bit of fun when you're doing a Groundhog's Day graphing project.

Materials:

• something to color with if using the B&W version,
• scissors,
• glue, and
• paper.

Instructions:

• Print out the groundhog template of choice - either black and white or color. You'll also need to print either the predictions page or the writing paper page.
• Color the pieces if you're using the black and white version. I always prefer to give the kids the black and white version but if you're doing this craft in conjunction with a larger Groundhog's Day graphing project you might want to give them the color version to speed things up.
• If using the predictions page, make a checkmark or an X beside the prediction you are making. Will it be sunny enough for the groundhog to see his shadow or so cloudy that he doesn't?
• If using the writing paper page, take some time to write a story, poem or report about a groundhog or Groundhog's Day. You may wish to complete the writing paper on the first day and then make the craft incorporating it on the second.
  • Note: the predictions page is appropriate for young children who can't print yet whereas the writing paper page gives children who can print the chance to practice.
• Cut out the template pieces -- most of the template pieces on this craft are easy enough for beginning scissor users but parents can help cut out some of the pieces if the kids are getting tired.
• Glue the groundhog together in the following order:
  • Glue the big teeth underneath of the mouth
  • Glue the nose above the mouth
  • Glue the eyes above the nose
  • Glue the ears to either side of the head
  • Glue the writing paper/predictions page so the chin is just overlapping it
  • Glue the hands to either side of the chin, also overlapping the writing paper/predictions page

• Set page margins to zero if you have trouble fitting the template on one page (FILE, PAGE SETUP or FILE, PRINTER SETUP in most browsers).
